Wal-Mart’s popular Family Mobile plans were quite the big hit on the pricing front last year, but the limited data (1GB of total data at “3G” speeds per family) was a big turn off for us in our 2013 Best Value In Wireless report. In fact, it was one of the biggest issues we had with the plan. For a family of 5, the cost was a lowly, $145 a month plus taxes (which could have been as high as 20% as the Family Mobile plan is a post-paid option) but the 1GB of split data would mean only 200MB per user before you slowed to 2G speeds.
Moving forward to the new offering, Wal-Mart has made line one a lower cost $39.88 but raised the cost of lines 2-5 to $34.88. In doing this, the data allotment has increased to 2.5GB from 1GB. The total cost of that monthly new monthly bill comes in at $179.40 plus taxes, or a $35 a month increase. To put this in perspective on the value front, the T-Mobile family plan with 5 lines with 500MB of data each would be $110 a month plus taxes or $22 a line.
While we love the lower cost Samsung Galaxy S II’s, III’s and IV’s that Wal-Mart is offering up, we recommend grabbing those guys cheap and bringing them over to T-Mobile or Simple Mobile for a better value.
